“Puzzle” is the key word in this work’s title, leading one to believe that the work poses a question. Actually the title relates to the three identically shaped puzzle pieces found in the painting. If one could place each piece into the hole in the rectangular block in the center of the picture, each would fit like a puzzle piece. The first puzzle piece is the object attached to the rear of the antique car, which Dalí had seen abandoned near Figueres. The second piece appears to be made of stone, balancing precariously on a pillar inspired by the ruins of Ampurias. A lion's head appears on this stone, a Dalínian symbol of terror and unsatisfied desires. The elusive third puzzle piece is the configuration of ballet dancers. The dancers are based on a postcard. The reclining figure is that of a philosopher contemplating a grain of sand; he is also a Narcissus figure. Narcissus was a youth who pined away for love of his own image reflected in a pool and transformed into a flower. A bureaucratic figure appears from the recesses in the stone block.

The Spanish painter Salvador Dali remains one of the most controversial and paradoxical artists of the twentieth century.
