Queen Elizabeth II - (from Reigning Queens Series) - Andy Warhol - Pop Art Paintings - Set Of 4 Framed Canvas (18 x 24 inches) Each
For this series of ‘Royal Edition’ screen prints depicting Queen Elizabeth II, American artist Andy Warhol used the official photograph released for the Silver Jubilee in 1977. The Queen did not sit for or commission this portrait.
The four prints were acquired for the Royal Collection in 2012 The photographic silkscreen technique used is central to Warhol’s practice, employed in both his prints and paintings. Warhol has simplified the portrait so that all that remains is a mask-like face. By reproducing the same image four times, Warhol demonstrates his interest in mass production and reminds us that Queen Elizabeth II is the most depicted woman in the world. The format of the prints and his intention that they should be displayed as multiples suggests that Warhol has been inspired to create the postage stamp on a monumental scale.
The Reigning Queens series brings together many of Warhol’s central themes – celebrity, portraiture, consumerism, decoration and the extremes of social hierarchy.
