Dante Gabriel Rossetti Paintings

Dante Gabriel Rossetti was a British poet, illustrator, painter, translator and founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. His work influenced the European Symbolists and was a major precursor of the Aesthetic movement. Rosetti's art was characterised by its sensuality and its medieval revivalism.

Rossetti's personal life was closely linked to his work, especially his relationships with his models and muses Elizabeth Siddal (who was also his wife), Fanny Cornforth and Jane Morris.

About The Salutation of Beatrice
"The Salutation of Beatrice" is one of the last paintings of the Pre-Raphaelite and Romantic painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti, completed shortly before the artist’s death in April 1882, illustrates lines from the second sonnet in medieval Italian poet Dante Alighieri’s Vita Nuova (New Life). It was put up for public display for the first time in 2016 at Liverpool's Walker Art Gallery, 135 years after it was painted. It depicts Rosseti’s muse Jane Morris, wife of the Pre-Raphaelite painter William Morris, as Beatrice Portinari, the subject of the poet’s unrequited love. The spurned Dante is in the background.
