" Entrance To The Public Gardens In Arles" by Vincent Van Gogh is a popular painting of the artist and his times.

For months, Van Gogh looked out over this courtyard of the hospital in Arles. That was in the spring of 1889. He drew the lush garden while staying there for treatment of his mental condition.Van Gogh drew with a reed pen, filling almost the entire page. It takes a while before you notice that a few figures are visible. There are people in the upper left, on the upstairs gallery. And on the far side of the garden, there are two nuns. As if it were a puzzle, he placed his signature on a watering can on the lower right, in front of the tall tree.

Vincent van Gogh (1853-90) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter whose work had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. In just over a decade, he produced more than 2,100 artworks but received little recognition during his lifetime. Van Gogh was unsuccessful during his lifetime and was considered a madman and a failure. He became famous after his suicide, and exists in the public imagination as the quintessential misunderstood and tortured genius artist.
