Wheatfield With Crows has been cited by several critics as one of Vincent van Gogh’s greatest works.

 

The painting depicts a dramatic, cloudy sky filled with crows over a wheat field. A sense of isolation is heightened by a central path leading nowhere and by the uncertain direction of flight of the crows. The crows may have been used by van Gogh as a symbol of death and rebirth, or of resurrection.

 

The painting is an examples of van Gogh's elongated double-square canvases, used exclusively by him in the last few weeks of his life, in June and July 1890.

 

The painting is held in the collection of the  Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam from where it was stolen in 1991, and quickly recovered.

Vincent van Gogh (1853-90) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter whose work had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. In just over a decade, he produced more than 2,100 artworks but received little recognition during his lifetime. Van Gogh was unsuccessful during his lifetime and was considered a madman and a failure. He became famous after his suicide, and exists in the public imagination as the quintessential misunderstood and tortured genius artist.
