"Portrait of a Young Man", the only known en-face portrait by the Italian Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli, is a portrait of a young man with a brown tunic that matches his eyes and a red hat known as a 'beretta'. His image is set against a dark background, and he seems to peer through a dusky pink fictive frame, which is painted to give the appearance of a three dimensional border. The idea of the portrait was revolutionary when this was painted, as the earlier portraits were in profile format. It is captivating due to the vivid and alert presence of the model, whose youthful informality the artist has succeeded in capturing masterfully. |
