"Les Voiles rouges - The Red Sails" is one of the most famous and expensive painting of the river Thames by Andre Derain. Les Voiles Rouges was probably painted at Greenwich and depicts a traditional Thames sailing barge with bright red sails on an equally vivid Thames, with other craft bobbing in the background ferrying goods in and out of London’s docks and wharfs. Derain's startlingly vibrant paintings of the Thames had an immeasurable impact on the history of art.

French artist, painter and sculptor Andre Derain (1880-1954) had a major role in the development of two of the most significant artistic movements of the early twentieth century. André Derain, Henri Matisse, and Maurice de Vlaminck were responsible for generating works with a totally new style which would become Fauvism. André's association with Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque was integral to early Cubism.
