Around 1911 the subject of Lesbianism first appeared in his drawings, not without precedent in the overwrought milieu of Viennese eroticism at the turn of the century. Two Girls Embracing (Two Friends), there’s an almost-tenderness – almost, but not quite, for these portrayals still retain a strangeness, a jarring confrontation with the viewer, and a sense of cold detachment in the lovers’ embrace.
