A Fête Day At Bekanir, 1903 Large Framed Print
Framed With Mat •
36x27 inches
This magnificent painting of court life in late 19th-century India was composed of a great many studies in oil that Weeks made of Bikanir palace in 1893. It exemplifies his ‘collage’ technique of building a major composition utilizing in-situ studies made during his expedition. The painting reflects the festivities about to take place during the annual celebration of the city’s founding. The architectural backdrop (the palace of Bikanir) is brilliantly and accurately recorded by Weeks, showing multiple tiers of the Rajah’s many rooms, some painted in white (the lower stories) whereas the upper two stories are yellow and the section to the right constructed in wood. |

Edwin Lord Weeks is one of the most celebrated of the American Orientalists. Most of his paintings render empathy and belonging than a patronising or condescending portrayal. Weeks who travelled and painted in Mathura, Benaras, Agra, Delhi, Amritsar and Bombay shows a mastery of artistic detail: most of his paintings bring together an amalgam of society, replete with men, women, animals, structures and dust; the royalty is incidental. A busy marketplace or a solitary mosque. Original Weeks' paintings today command prices in excess of a million dollars at auctions.
