About A Frank Encampment in the Desert of Mount Sinai, 1842 – The Convent of St. Catherine in the Distance
“A Frank Encampment in the Desert of Mount Sinai, 1842 – The Convent of St. Catherine in the Distance” is considered the greatest of all desert paintings by John Frederick Lewis. When it was exhibited at the O.W.C.S. in 1856, John Ruskin declared that it 'ranked amongst the most wonderful pictures in the world'. Lewis entered into a true relationship with Cairo: the city gave him the colours, the light, the architecture - the material he needed to become a great artist. Cairo made Lewis interrogate himself, the artist's relationship to his material, his social and political role, his integrity and, finally, his historic responsibility.
