Born in Germany in January 1830, Albert Bierstadt came to the United States with his parents as a 1-year-old. Living in Massachusetts, he would grow up to become one of the foremost painters of the American West. Albert Beerstadt studied painting in Europe and developed a style distinct from that of both New York’s Hudson River School and Thomas Moran’s English aesthetic, and his name became synonymous with luminous sweeping vistas of Western landscapes.
