Max Ernst Paintings

Max Ernst was a German painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and poet. A prolific artist, Ernst was a primary pioneer of the Dada movement and Surrealism.

Max Ernst attacked the conventions and traditions of art, all the while possessing a thorough knowledge of European art history. He questioned the sanctity of art by creating non-representational works without clear narratives, by making sport of religious icons, and by formulating new means of creating artworks to express the modern condition.

About A Very Quiet Evening Max Ernst Painting
This rediscovered peace is manifest in A Very Quiet Evening, painted in 1957, in which Ernst widens our field of vision through the inclusion of a country landscape, suggested by vigorously-scratched colour bands. The deep blue sky is bounded by hills, behind which a bright orange sun is setting.A powerful ode to the natural world, this work conveys the fleeting, poetic character of nature through a complex range of colours and techniques: the traditional oil-on-canvas method is juxtaposed with grattage (scratching) – a technique that appealed to this Surrealist artist. Indeed, Ernst’s use of “semi-automatic” techniques such as collage and grattage was intended to promote spontaneity and also to bring his “meditative and hallucinatory faculties” to the fore (M. Caws, ed., “Beyond Painting”, in Surrealism, London and New York, 2004, p. 215). The spontaneity afforded by these various techniques enabled the artist to push through the boundaries of his own perception. Like a poet using automatic writing to dive deep into his own unconscious, Ernst immerses us in his feelings rather than his perceptions, and even states: “In the same way that the poet listens to the automatic processes of thought and notes the results, so the painter projects directly onto paper and canvas the suggestions offered to him by his optical inspiration.”
