M. V. Dhurandhar

The idea of a retrospective on well-known artist M. V. Dhurandhar was first mooted in the sesquicentennial year of his birth (1867). The artist, who died in 1944, was hugely successful in his lifetime and his works covered all known genres of realistic art.

Portraits, landscapes, episodes from history and mythology, as well as mappings of social life, rendered by way of oil paintings, watercolours, drawings, sketches, and commercially popular as posters, postcards, book covers and illustrations, as well as oleographs.

A master of anatomical studies, he remained unmoved in the face of experimentation, refusing to budge from the practice he had trained in, and which he considered the purest form of art making.

About Baj Bahadur Rupmati M V Dhurandhar Indian Masters Artwork
The current painting is titled Baj Bahadur Rupmati, and depicts the famous love story between Rani Roopmati and the Sultan of Malwa, Baz Bahadur. The tragic tale of love features prominently in the folklore of Malwa and appears as a subject of classical Mughal paintings from the mid 16th century onwards, first appearing in the Akbarnama. In the current composition, we see Baz Bahadur entreating the lowly shepherdess Roopmati to return to the city of Mandu to become his bride. She agrees, but shortly afterwards the Mughal Emperor Akbar sends an army to Mandu and defeats the Sultan's army. Rather than being captured by the Emperor, Roopmati chooses to take her own life, a tragic end to an enduring love story.
