Abanindranath Tagore was born at Jorasanko in the Tagore family home in Calcutta. He was the nephew of Rabindranath Tagore. In 1907, Abanindranath together with his brother Gaganendranath Tagore founded the Indian Society of Oriental Art which became the harbinger of an indigenous modernism in Indian art in the early twentieth century. Abanindranath Tagore was also the first major exponent of Swadeshi values in Indian art, thereby founding the influential Bengal school of art, which led to the development of modern Indian painting. He was also a noted writer, particularly for children. View Artist Collection
