"Blue Torso, 1973" is a famous painting by the Indian master Tyeb Mehta from his popular Diagonal serie that creates an effect a partition of space that was homogenous until the making of this gesture, into two related but separate parts. The diagonal series also emphasises separation and twinning and the psychology of schism that haunted the painter. Mr. Mehta’s style of painting sets him apart from India’s revered group of Modernist painters. His paintings stand out for his use of colors, in clear-cut segments, which create deconstructed, and sometimes disturbing, figurative representations of bulls and gods.
