Here, a flirtatious, barefoot suitor works his charm on an orange seller whilst three women observe his efforts from the backdrop of a vera da pozzo, the stone apron that protects the opening of a well. In the years leading up to 1890, von Blaas took pleasure in adding everyday props to his paintings including an abundance of flowers, brightly-coloured fruits and occasionally fish, and in this case, old copper kettles. The old brick and stone wall, columns and paving stones are also an important feature contrasting (as the artist's biographer describes) 'the decaying grandeur of old Venetian stone with fresh flowers and fruit'. The young people are the 'links in an apparently endless chain of generations who carry on the Venetian traditions and way of life'
