"Gesture, 1978" is a famous painting by the renowned Indian modernist painter Tyeb Mehta which belongs to a sequence of works which brought focus to the "hands" of figures produced while Mehta lived in Delhi. Mehta's stark formal treatment of dismembered figures with arms flailing, the fractured picture plane with juxtaposed flat areas of colour, and the emphasised diagonals heighten the impact and awareness of violence and suffering. Mr. Mehta’s style of painting sets him apart from India’s revered group of Modernist painters. His paintings stand out for his use of colors, in clear-cut segments, which create deconstructed, and sometimes disturbing, figurative representations of bulls and gods.
