About Henry Geldzahler and Christopher Scott (1969)
A shared passion for opera sparked an instant connection between British Pop Art pioneer David Hockney and famed Metropolitan Museum of Art curator Henry Geldzahler when the pair met at Andy Warhol’s Factory in 1963. A robust and flamboyant Geldzahler, clad in a vest over his shirt and tie, sits on the Art Deco pink sofa, which the curator had originally bought for The Met. His right ankle rests over his left knee. The scene from a window behind the sofa is born from a Polaroid of the New York skyline snapped from the window of Scott’s study. A serious and slender Scott stands rigid to the right of the rounded sofa in a quintessential trench coat that seems to be two sizes too big.
