High and Low (Tengoku to Jigoku, literally "Heaven and Hell") is a 1963 police procedural crime drama film directed by Akira Kurosawa, starring Toshiro Mifune, Tatsuya Nakadai and Kyōko Kagawa. The film is loosely based on the 1959 novel King's Ransom by Ed McBain.

 

Gondo, a wealthy executive, desires to buy a shoe company. However, he faces challenges when his driver's son gets kidnapped and he is forced to pay a huge ransom in order to save him.

 

Akira Kurosawa was a Japanese film director and screenwriter, who directed 30 films in a career spanning 57 years. He is regarded as one of the most important and influential filmmakers in the history of cinema. Kurosawa entered the Japanese film industry in 1936, following a brief stint as a painter.
