Grandma Moses, byname of Anna Mary Robertson Moses (1860-1961) was an American folk painter who was internationally popular for her naive documentation of rural life in the United States.
She began painting in earnest at the age of 78 and is a prominent example of a newly successful art career at an advanced age. Her works have been shown and sold worldwide, including in museums. Her artworks are warmly reassuring and the simple realism, nostalgic atmosphere and luminous color with which Grandma Moses portrayed farm life and rural countryside won her a wide following.
In the 1950s more Americans knew the name of Grandma Moses than that of any other artist!
