Krishna, having heard of the villagers preparing a puja for Indra dissuades them on account that no sacrifice should be performed to solicit natural phenomenon. Instead of spending time and energy in rituals the villagers should tend to their fields, cattle and households. Upon hearing Krishna's words and as punishment for such affront, Indra, the penultimate god and master of war, rivers, rains and thunderbolts unleashes a great storm to flood the village. Krishna uproots mount Govardhan and shields the villagers and their cattle. Thus defeated, Indra accepts Krishna as the supreme Lord.
