Painted in 1895, L'abandon (Les deux amies) is one of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's masterpieces, vividly capturing an intimate, behind-the-scenes moment in the Parisian demi-monde in which he so notoriously had made his home. The picture has featured in a vast array of books and exhibitions, a tribute to its importance, and has passed through the hands of many illustrious dealers and collectors alike, including the painter Max Liebermann, reflecting the esteem of one artist for another.
