"Long Live Love" is a beautiful symbolic painting of love by the German dadaist and surrealist Max Ersnt. A male and female nude are intertwined within a form resembling a hollow tree trunk. Smaller tree stumps are spread through a strange, bare landscape. Ernst lived in a ménage à trois with poet Paul Éluard and his wife Gala, and it is likely that it is Ernst and Gala that are the figures depicted in this work. It is unclear whether the couple is passionately embracing or suffocating in claustrophobic proximity. The tree enveloping them may be a symbol of the marriage of Éluard and Gala.
