The painting gives an incredibly detailed view of the waterfront between the stone wall of the city and the curving shore of calm water. The buildings and slight hill in the background, notably a tall white structure with a thin, high tower (a mosque, probably) expand into a crowd of traders in the foreground. Men sit along the edge of the road selling fruits, while others form a crowd on the horse and on foot near the wall. The artist's attention to detail is especially noteworthy in the variety of ethnic costumes characteristic of the 19th century Near East.
