Born in Germany in January 1830, Albert Bierstadt came to the United States with his parents as a 1-year-old. Living in Massachusetts, he would grow up to become one of the foremost painters of the American West. Albert Beerstadt studied painting in Europe and developed a style distinct from that of both New York’s Hudson River School and Thomas Moran’s English aesthetic, and his name became synonymous with luminous sweeping vistas of Western landscapes. About Mont Blanc (French Alps) Albert Bierstadt Mountains Landscape Painting
Bierstadt also completed many works of European subject matter. Several paintings of the French Alps, most notably Mont Blanc, are highly regarded within the artist's oeuvre. Bierstadt utilized the techniques of the classical landscape painters of the seventeenth century. Trees were used as framing devices for the composition, and rivers were used to draw the viewer's eye into the scene. Bierstadt blended these old-world techniques with his own unique style, where atmospheric perspective dissolved into a clarity of detail modeled by one of the masters of American landscape painting.
