About Nathiq Ismail Gulgee Modern Masters Calligraphic Painting

Ismail Gulgee (1926–2007) was one of Pakistan’s most celebrated modern artists, internationally renowned for his powerful fusion of Islamic calligraphy and abstract expressionism. Trained initially as an engineer at Columbia and Harvard Universities, Gulgee transitioned into art and became famous first as a master portraitist before evolving into a pioneering abstract artist. Gulgee is best known for transforming Arabic and Urdu calligraphy into bold, gestural compositions filled with energy, movement, and spiritual intensity. His large-scale canvases often feature sweeping brushstrokes, rich textures, and luminous colors, blending traditional Islamic visual heritage with the freedom and dynamism of Western action painting. Many of his works also incorporated mixed media, including gold leaf, silver, and mirror glass, giving them a sculptural and monumental quality.
