About Natives on the Ouse River, Van Diemen's Land
When the English artist John Glover migrated to Tasmania in 1831 at the age of 64 he, like many free colonists before him who had left the old world for the new anticipated a new kind of Arcadian life. This idea was certainly borne out by the many beautiful landscapes he painted in a luminous transparent style within a short space of time until his powers waned in about 1840. But there was a dark side to this world, with acts of attrition by the colonists towards the indigenous peoples, including massacres and kidnappings, that led to the conciliator George Augustus Robinson misguidedly rounding up the last of the Aboriginal tribes with the intention of preventing their extinction.
