Color field paintings were very large, exceedingly simplified, and color-
dominated paintings. This became the signature style of all three artists. The artists
agreed that rather than using complex images, the oversized canvases of color took on a
more honest, primitive and insightful tone. They believed the scale and illuminating
fields of color brought the viewer in closer, creating the sense of being surrounded by
the mystical and transcendental. Their objective was to give the viewer a place of
peace and spirituality in an imperfect world.

Color field paintings were very large, exceedingly simplified, and color- dominated paintings. This became the signature style of all three artists. The artists agreed that rather than using complex images, the oversized canvases of color took on a more honest, primitive and insightful tone. They believed the scale and illuminating fields of color brought the viewer in closer, creating the sense of being surrounded by the mystical and transcendental. Their objective was to give the viewer a place of peace and spirituality in an imperfect world.

A prominent figure among the New York School painters, Mark Rothko moved through many artistic styles until reaching his signature 1950s motif of soft, rectangular forms floating on a stained field of color.   Although Rothko himself refused to adhere to any art movement, he is generally identified as an abstract expressionist. Heavily influenced by mythology and philosophy, he was insistent that his art was filled with content and brimming with ideas.
