About Old Monkey with Cherry in Autumn Kansetsu Hashimoto Japanese Art Masterpiece Painting
Old Monkey with Cherry in Autumn, a color on silk painting completed by the Japanese artist Hashimoto Kansetsu in 1938.This is a painting done for the educated elite. Although industrialized Japan had been at war across southeast Asia for decades at this point, the aristocracy still held Chinese language and literature in high regard. The monkey and persimmon is a famous motif of auspicious nature in Chinese painting. Hashimoto (1883–1945) was active in Kyoto, where he produced a number of nihonga works inspired by Chinese scenery or Chinese classical literature. He was the son of the painter Hashimoto Kaikan, from whom he gained a love of Chinese culture. He studied at Chikujokai, a private school established by the famous nihonga painter Takeuchi Seihō, but eventually withdrew due to differences of opinion.
