About Playing with the Kittens (Leker Med Kattungarna) Édouard Castres Orientalist Painting
Castres was commissioned by the entrepreneur Benjamin Henneberg to represent the internment of the Bourbaki Army in Switzerland in a large-scale panorama. He employed a team of painters, including the young Ferdinand Hodler, to execute the work over a period of five months in 1881 in Geneva. This painting is from the time of the Franco-Prussian war of 1870/71. Castres worked as a Red Cross volunteer accompanying General Bourbaki as he captured all small moments of happiness. This painting is one among those great masterpieces to remember the good old times.
