Lenore "Lee" Krasner was an American abstract expressionist painter, with a strong speciality in collage. She was married to Jackson Pollock. Although there was much cross-pollination between their two styles, the relationship somewhat overshadowed her contribution for some time. View Artist Collection

About Shattered Light 1954
An exhibition of her work planned by the critic Clement Greenberg had been cancelled when Greenberg decided he didn’t appreciate her newer paintings. Plagued by insomnia, Krasner began painting at night in her husband’s old studio, and since she disliked working with color under artificial light, she used only shades of umber and white. Many critics would describe the passing of her husband as a turning point in her career. Pollock’s death led to long spells of insomnia that Krasner would leverage to create emotionally-charged paintings. Fuelled by sleep deprivation, aggression, and grief, Krasner took to larger canvases which she fixed to the walls.
