The painting is a representation of Zōjō-ji, which is notable for its relationship with the Tokugawa clan, the rulers of Japan during the Edo period, with six of the Tokugawa shōguns being buried in the Taitoku-in Mausoleum in the temple grounds. Koitsu was inspired by the new direction and began to create hauntingly beautiful scenes of Japan bathed in moonlight, sunsets and the changing seasons. Tsuchiya Koitsu (1879-1949) was a master of the Shin Hanga movement, though his first prints were of the Sino Japanese war. Born in rural Japan, he started an apprentice as a wood block carver at the age of 15. He came the attention of the ukiyo-e master Kobayashi Kiyochika in whose house he lived and studied for 19 years. About the Posters
