"Temptation Of Saint Anthony" is one of the most popular paintings by Max Ernst. A film-maker, Albert Lewin, in the mid 1940s organized a competition and asked ten reputable artists such as Leonora Carrington, Max Ernst, Salvador Dali, Dorothea Tanning, Paul Delvaux etc. to produce a painting i.e., a surrealist version of an often repeated subject in art and literature: The Temptation of Saint Anthony, to be featured in one of his movies "The Private Affairs of Bel Ami". Max Ernst's version, a version much inspired on Grunewald and other early Renaissance German painters, now at the Wilhelm-Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg, Germany, won the competition.
