"The Church Of Chatou" is a well-known painting by Andre Derain that belongs to the series of landscapes Derain executed during his stay in Chatou. Chatou was a small suburban town north of Paris which was the native town of Derain. The use of simple geometric elements, the massive simplification of the volumes, the sober reduction of the palette and the compressed composition completely invert the earlier representation of Chatou by the artist. In The Church of Chatouthe painter chooses a low point of view on the opposite side, severely frames the architectures, proposes a dark transition towards them and confers on the emphatic volumetric relations all the formal performance of the painting.
