The Master of Vyšší Brod was an anonymous Bohemian painter active around 1350. It seems likely that he was from Prague originally; an altarpiece for the Cistercian convent of Vyšší Brod, from which his name is derived, may still be seen in Prague. View Artist Collection

About The Crucifixion Of Christ
The cross of Christ is in the centre, with the thieves' crosses on either side. Beneath the cross is the Roman captain Longinus, piercing Christ's side with his lance. Opposite him is the good captain, testifying that Christ truly is the Son of God. On the left are John and Mary with her companions. Mary Magdalene is desperately embracing the stem of the cross. On the right at the front the executioner's henchmen are throwing dice for Christ's robe. The lavish detail, refined painterly composition and powerful presentation lend tangible expression to the drama of this event.
