"The Fall of Icarus (La Chute d'Icare)," 1943, by Henri Matisse, is one of twenty plates Matisse created to illustrate his ground-breaking book "Jazz". Here, the mythological figure Icarus is presented in a simplified form floating against a royal blue night-time sky. The illustrations derive from maquettes of cut and pasted coloured papers, which were then printed using a stencil technique known as "pochoir". His magnificent creations are now the centrepiece of a new show at New York's Museum of Modern Art, "Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs".About the Canvas Prints
