"The Scholars" by Gabriel Cornelius Ritter von Max(23 August 1840 – 24 November 1915) was a Prague-born Austrian painter. Monkeys as scholars. It can be said that the painting is symbolical depiction of the situation of incomprehension. The monkeys as non-human (or, at least, quasi-human) are unable to comprehend and appreciate adequately the human spirit's creation because the world of specifically human experience is closed for them. For them it is simply non-existent.
