“The Tomb of Sultan Mehmet”, a rare Turkish subject by Rudolf Ernst depicts the interior of the Yesil Türbe (Green Tomb) in Bursa and the burial place of Sultan Mehmet. It is unusual to find a painting by Ernst that depicts an actual place as often his paintings were combination of his imagination, photographs, props and his own memory. Its auction price was estimated to be at £180,000-250,000 in the Sotheby's Sale of 19th Century European Paintings. His intensely detailed surfaces and the complex interplay of rich fabrics, decorative tiles, and intricate metalwork seem to glow with jewel-like colour giving a sophisticated finish to the scene.
