About The Tulip Folly
"The Tulip Folly" by Jean-Léon Gérôme represents "Tulipomania". A period in the Dutch Golden Age during which contract prices for bulbs of the recently introduced tulip reached extraordinarily high levels and then suddenly collapsed. The painting depicts how soldiers were ordered to trample the flowerbeds in an effort to stabilize the market.
